This model features the Hammond interchangeable type block system, allowing different typefaces and languages to be used by swapping the type block. This example includes two type blocks: a script typeface and a standard typewriter typeface. Original carrying case included.

The Model 26 utilizes a hammer-and-band striking system rather than individual typebars. This machine originally used a rubber strike band against which the hammer impacts to transfer an impression to the paper. The original band was missing when acquired. A section of rubber heat-shrink tubing has been installed in its place, allowing the machine to type. This substitute is user-replaceable.

A new ribbon has been installed by us. Minimal functional testing was performed, and type samples are shown in the listing photographs. All keys were tested and all characters printed during testing. Buyers should note that during test results, when typing in red ink and in uppercase, the escapement occasionally jumps, resulting in extra spacing visible in those lines. No other escapement issues were observed.

One symbol keycap is missing: the key immediately to the right of the “M,” typically used for the “?” and “,” characters. The key functions mechanically, but the cap itself is absent. These keycaps were designed to be user-replaceable and attach via screws. The original screw is present, and a replacement cap may be installed by the user.

This typewriter originally had two folding-release knobs, one on each side, which are pulled downward simultaneously to allow the machine to fold. Both knobs were missing when acquired. Two small screws have been installed in their place; when pushed downward at the same time, they allow the typewriter to fold and unfold. Some pressure is required, and replacement knobs would provide more comfortable long-term operation. The screws are visible in the listing images, identified by a green pointing indicator.

Condition shows minor staining, surface pitting, and areas of rust consistent with age and use. Overall condition is good. The machine is offered in generally working condition with the modifications described above.
