Many of the real photo postcards bear verso inscriptions noting that George appears in the photographs, and several include handwritten descriptions of the scenes depicted. Most are postmarked 1917, with some unused.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe images cover various aspects of training camp life, including barracks interiors, rifle training, map reading instruction, marching, drilling, hiking, and camping. The cards appear to originate from Plattsburgh Training Camp in Plattsburgh, New York, and Camp Devens in Ayer, Massachusetts.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eGeorge F.A. Mulcahy (1892-1968) was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts and educated at Boston English High School and Dartmouth College. He enlisted in the Army in 1917, received two battlefield promotions, and was decorated with the Silver Star, France's Croix de Guerre, and the Purple Heart. He later served as superintendent of Concord Reformatory (1921-1927) and retired as master of Deer Island House of Correction. He returned to active duty in the Army Air Force during World War II, attaining the rank of Major. He is buried at Winthrop Cemetery, Winthrop, Massachusetts.
