Our Auction Venues & Formats

+

We operate multiple auction venues and formats across two brands — Memory Hole Vintage and Granite Union Auction Company — which means we can find the right home for a wide range of items. When you consign with us, we'll determine which venue is best suited for each item based on its type, condition, value, and market demand.

Memory Hole Vintage Online Catalog Auctions

Our flagship format. Each lot is individually photographed, described, and published in an online catalog with a preview period and absentee bidding before the live sale, where buyers bid in real time. Primarily a smalls auction — items that are easily shippable and durable enough to survive transit.

Best for: Curated, collectible smalls that photograph well, ship easily, and appeal to a national audience.

Memory Hole Vintage Online Pop-Up Discovery Auctions

Fast-paced online sales with no catalog or preview period — items are revealed live during the auction. The thrill is in the discovery.

Best for: Ephemera, smalls, and interesting items that don't need extensive cataloging and benefit from the excitement of a surprise reveal.

Granite Union Auction Co. In-Person Antique Auctions

Traditional in-person auctions held at our Franklin, NH facility. May include a published catalog, photographs, and online bidding, or may be conducted without. The best of the best.

Best for: Higher-value items, large or delicate pieces, fine furniture, and items that benefit from in-person inspection. No shipping size constraints.

Granite Union Auction Co. In-Person Discovery Auctions

High-energy in-person sales where items are presented on the spot — box lots, grouped items, and treasures waiting to be discovered.

Best for: Box lots, grouped items, lower-value items, and large quantities that move best in a fast-paced, in-person setting.

We reserve the right to determine which venue is most suitable for each item. If you have a venue preference, let us know when you begin the consignment process and we'll do our best to accommodate it.

What Items We Take on Consignment

+

Because we operate across multiple venues and formats, we can accept a broader range of items than a strictly online auction house. That said, there are countless variables that go into determining what items we pick, including aesthetic value, design, subject matter, condition, rarity, age, and value. We especially love items with dark or esoteric subject matter, items that tell the stories of everyday people through the material objects they left behind, items with interesting and thoughtful design, and one-of-a-kind items.

Auction items

Online Catalog Auctions

Our online catalog auctions have the highest curation standard. Items shipped to buyers must be practical to pack and send safely.

Items for online catalog auctions should:

  • Have a value of $10 or more
  • Be at least 40 years old
  • Be small enough (preferably no larger than 24" x 18" x 16") and durable enough to ship
  • Not be readily available for purchase on online marketplaces
Auction items

In-Person Antique Auctions

Our in-person antique auctions are where the truly special pieces go. Buyers can inspect items in person, so there are no shipping constraints — this is the venue for our best and biggest consignments.

In-person antique auctions are ideal for:

  • High-value and premium items
  • Large or heavy pieces — fine furniture, rugs, architectural salvage
  • Fragile or delicate items that don't ship well
  • Items that benefit from hands-on inspection
  • Collections and notable estate pieces

Discovery Auctions

Our discovery formats — both online pop-ups and in-person — are fast-paced and high-energy. They're perfect for moving volume and finding homes for a wide range of items.

Discovery auctions can accommodate:

  • Lower-value items and box lots
  • Higher quantities and estate cleanouts
  • Ephemera, paper goods, and smalls
  • Items of any age, as long as there's buyer interest
  • Pieces that don't need extensive cataloging to sell
Auction items

When you begin our consignment process, you'll send us pictures and information about your items, and we'll determine which venue is the best fit. Not every item will be a match for our auctions, and we appreciate your understanding if we pass on certain pieces — it's never a reflection of the quality of what you have.

Our Commission

+

Our commission is calculated on a per-lot, graduated, marginal basis — similar to how tax brackets work. Each rate applies only to the portion of the hammer price that falls within that bracket, not to the entire amount. Brackets reset for every lot, so each item is calculated independently. This means you keep more as items sell for higher prices.

Hammer Price Bracket Our Commission Your Share
$0 – $10 50% 50%
$10.01 – $100 40% 60%
$100.01 – $250 35% 65%
$250.01 – $500 30% 70%
$500.01 – $1,000 25% 75%
$1,000.01 – $2,500 20% 80%
$2,500.01 – $5,000 15% 85%
Over $5,000 10% 90%

Payment & Reporting

+

Consignors are paid within fourteen (14) calendar days following the date of the auction.

Payment is made by check, mailed to your address on file. Upon request, we can also pay via PayPal, Venmo, or Zelle. If payment is directed to a PayPal or Venmo business account, any resulting transaction fees will be deducted from your payout.

Following each auction, you'll receive a post-sale report listing each lot offered, its hammer price (or indication of pass), the commission calculated under the graduated schedule, and your payout amount.

When we first receive your items, we'll prepare an inventory list identifying what was received along with any condition notes. You'll have five (5) business days to dispute any descriptions or condition notes.

Consignors bear the expense of shipping or delivering items to us. All other expenses — including transaction fees, advertising, shipping to the buyer, materials, photography, and cataloguing — are covered by us.

Passed & Unpaid Items

+

If a consigned item passes (does not receive any bids), you will be responsible for any shipping costs to return the item if you are unable to pick it up in person. Alternatively, you may elect to release and forfeit the item to us, in which case you will have no further claim to it.

Backed-out bidders: If the winning bidder fails to complete the purchase, the sale is void and you will not receive proceeds from that transaction. You will have two options:

  1. Re-consign the item for sale at the next available auction under the same terms, or
  2. Have the item returned to you at your expense.

If you have already been paid and the buyer subsequently backs out or reverses the purchase, you must refund your portion of the proceeds within fourteen (14) calendar days of written notice.

Unclaimed Items

Unsold items are available for retrieval beginning the day after the auction. If unsold items remain unclaimed for sixty (60) days after written notice, ownership transfers to us and you will have no further claim to the items.

Reserves & No Sale Fees

+

Unless otherwise arranged, all consigned items are offered without reserve — meaning they will sell to the highest bidder regardless of the final bid amount.

Selling without reserve encourages bidder participation and generally produces stronger results. We set minimum start bids based on our expertise, knowledge of the market, and familiarity with our buyer base, with the goal of encouraging competitive bidding.

If you would like to set a reserve (a minimum price an item must reach to sell), you may request one. The existence of a reserve may be disclosed to bidders, though the specific amount may not be.

If a reserve is not met, a no-sale fee of 20% of the reserve amount (not to exceed $25 per item) will apply.

You will also be responsible for any return shipping fees. These fees will be deducted from your payout or invoiced separately.

In our experience, selling items without reserve significantly improves bidder enthusiasm and results.
