Large archive of antique and vintage ephemera related to the Grand Army of the Republic, Department of Rhode Island, spanning multiple posts and auxiliary organizations. The material dates from the 1870s through the 1930s and encompasses correspondence, programs, printed broadsides, postcards, photographs, and manuscript documents associated with several G.A.R. posts in Providence and the surrounding area.
Posts and organizations represented include Prescott Post No. 1, Arnold Post No. 4 (Old Arsenal), Slocum Post No. 10, Ives' Post No. 13, George H. Browne Post No. 25, the Department of Rhode Island Woman's Relief Corps, and the Head-quarters Staff Association. Documents include a printed "Ritual for the Burial of Deceased Comrades, and Memorial Service" booklet prepared by order of Prescott Post No. 1, adopted August 11, 1871, and printed by Rhode Island Printing Co. in 1877; a Prescott Post No. 1 song sheet with "The Battle Cry of Freedom" and "Tenting on the Old Camp Ground"; a "Compliments of the Post Commander, 1882" card with locomotive vignette; a "Soldierly Creed" printed card with G.A.R. medal graphic; General Orders for Memorial Day from Ives' Post No. 13 dated May 28, 1898; an In Memoriam program for Slocum Post No. 10 Memorial Day exercises at Swan Point Cemetery dated May 30, 1930; handwritten committee reports on Arnold Post No. 4 letterhead dated June 1912 and 1913 signed by C. W. Brown; a typed letter on George H. Browne Post No. 25 letterhead from Edgewood, Rhode Island, dated July 3, 1933, addressed to Fred A. Burt, Assistant Adjutant General; and a handwritten letter on Department of Rhode Island Woman's Relief Corps letterhead dated February 3, 1906, addressed to Commander Burnside Camp No. 5. A postcard depicting the Soldiers Monument in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, and a photograph of a large public gathering at a stone building are also included. An 1878 undertaker's invoice from James Boyce, Furnishing Undertaker, Providence, Rhode Island, billed to the estate of Wm. A. Knight for funeral services, is present among the papers.
The grouping contains a substantial quantity of additional documents, letters, and printed pieces not individually described. The materials show age-related toning, foxing, fold creases, and edge wear throughout. Some items have tears or losses at edges. Offered as found, with contents not fully inventoried.
