The "Ardencraig" (Official No. 93332) was an iron three-masted cargo ship built by Russell & Co. at the Cartsdyke West yard in Greenock, Scotland, launched August 20, 1886, yard number 149. She was registered at Glasgow on December 13, 1886, under first owners Edmiston & Mitchell, timber merchants, managed by Alex Mitchell. The vessel measured 2,153 gross registered tons. Ownership later passed to Robert Crawford and Robert Rowat of Glasgow in the late 1890s. On January 8, 1911, while homeward bound from Melbourne with a cargo of wheat, the "Ardencraig" struck the Crim Ledge Rocks off the Scilly Isles in thick fog, her master believing the ship to be some 20 miles off Scilly at the time. The crew of 31 abandoned ship in the ship's boats and were rescued by the St. Agnes lifeboat "Charles Deere James" and the Bishop Lighthouse relief boat. After drifting in a sinking condition for about an hour, the vessel rolled over and foundered, losing all cargo and the crew's belongings.
