Antique maritime sextant manufactured by Heath & Co. Ltd., Crayford, London, serial number 5706. The arc is engraved "Humphrey Matthews. R.N." and "Heath & Co. Ltd. Crayford. London." The sextant is housed in its original fitted mahogany case with brass hardware and green felt cushion blocks. The interior lid holds a National Physical Laboratory Certificate of Examination, Class A, dated August 1916, confirming examination of sextant No. 5706 with silver-divided arc. The case lid is inscribed "M.J. Brennan, New York City, N.Y." and stamped "Property of M.J. Brennan, New York City, New York."

The sextant and case show wear consistent with age and use. The wooden handle on the case interior has a crack. The case shows general surface wear and scuffing.
