Absentee bids let you place your maximum bid on an item before the live auction begins. During the live show, we’ll continue bidding on your behalf up to your max bid — just like leaving a bid with a traditional auctioneer.
When you place an absentee bid, the system sets the current bid conservatively — just enough to keep you in the lead without revealing your full amount.
The current bid shown on each lot reflects all confirmed absentee bids and updates automatically as new bids come in.
When the live auction starts, bidding will begin at the current bid. The auctioneer will continue bidding on behalf of absentee bidders up to their max bids.
Because absentee bids can arrive seconds apart, the current bid you see may not always include bids still being processed. Refresh the page for the most up-to-date information.

Lot 001 - Antique Scrimshaw Whale Tooth Engraved with "South Eastern View Nantucket, Mass 1838" Harbor Scene, Town Waterfront, Sailing Vessels, Church Steeples, and Horse-Drawn Cart, 8-1/4" L
Antique whale tooth engraved with a detailed harbor scene inscribed "South Eastern View Nantucket, Mass" and dated 1838. The engraved composition depicts the Nantucket, Massachusetts waterfront as seen from the southeast, with rows of buildings, church steeples, sailing vessels and ships in the harbor, and a horse-drawn cart with driver in the foreground.
The tooth exhibits characteristics consistent with an authentic antique sperm whale tooth, including a deep conical root cavity with interior nodules, natural age cracking, and patina. The authenticity of the engraved design as period work cannot be verified at this time. Condition includes natural age cracks throughout the tooth and chipping along the edges near the base. Please note a large chip has been repaired with glue at an earlier date at the opening of the root cavity. Other minor chipping is present.
