Lot 048 - Antique U.S. Army Service Gas Mask Canvas Carry Bag, Circa 1921, with Anachronistic Gas Mask
Antique U.S. Army Service gas mask canvas carry bag, circa 1921, stenciled "US" with a Chemical Warfare Service insignia, the letter "U," and "Army Service Gas Mask" on the front flap. The khaki canvas bag features a snap closure, canvas carry strap, and metal hardware. The bag is accompanied by an anachronistic gas mask that does not correspond to the bag's era. The mask is a rubber facepiece with two round glass eye lenses, a front-mounted filter canister with perforated face and red band, and elastic head straps. Markings on the reverse of the mask include "BRP," "NORMAL," a date of "18/11/41," "LOT 190," and "287." The mask dates to 1941 and is not original to the bag.
The bag shows soiling, staining, and wear consistent with age. The mask shows dried and stiffened rubber, surface dust, and wear to the painted finish on the filter canister.
