Large antique archive of personal and military correspondence addressed to W. A. Howard, spanning his time as a cadet at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, and his service as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps. The collection fills a cardboard crate and includes hundreds of letters and envelopes, many with contents intact, dating from the early 1900s. Postmarks include Grand Rapids, Michigan, Mackinac, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Rockville, and other locations. Return addresses on several envelopes identify the Office of the General Manager, Grand Rapids & Indiana Railway Co., Grand Rapids, Michigan. Also present are official U.S. Marine Corps documents from the Assistant Adjutant and Inspector's Office in Manila, Philippine Islands, dated June 1905 and signed by Major Rufus H. Lane. Later correspondence is addressed to First Lieutenant Wm. A. Howard, U.S.M.C., at 1769 Columbia Road, Washington, D.C. The lot includes mourning-bordered envelopes, typed military documents, and additional ephemera. The archive is unsearched and offered as found. The paper shows age-related toning and wear throughout, with some torn envelopes and creased contents.
