Pair of antique French hair work mourning palettes presented in matching oval black wood frames with gilt inner bezels and decorative leaf-pattern mats worked in hair. One frame contains a hair work palette depicting a graveyard scene with a weeping willow tree, a gravestone inscribed "Souvenir," a cross, and a tiered monument, all constructed from human hair on a tinted ground under convex glass. The second frame contains a photographic portrait of a young woman seated with a book, surrounded by a matching hair work leaf-pattern mat. The two pieces are connected in subject, with the mourning scene and portrait presented as a memorial pair.

The convex dome glass on the portrait frame has been replaced with flat glass. Paper backings on both frames are replacements. The frames show wear to their surfaces, and the mats exhibit toning and foxing. Display stands are not included.
