Antique medical reference book titled "The People's Common Sense Medical Adviser in Plain English: or, Medicine Simplified" by R. V. Pierce, M.D., fortieth edition. Pierce is identified on the title page as one of the staff of consulting physicians and surgeons at the Invalids' Hotel and Surgical Institute, and president of the World's Dispensary Medical Association. The title page notes "One Million and Ninety Thousand" copies printed. Published by the World's Dispensary Printing Office and Bindery, Buffalo, New York. Copyright 1885 by the World's Dispensary Medical Association, entered according to Act of Congress in the office of the Librarian of Congress, Washington, D.C.

The book is bound in embossed black covers with gilt spine lettering reading "The People's Common Sense Medical Adviser by R. V. Pierce M.D." A frontispiece portrait of Pierce with a facsimile signature reading "Yours Truly R. V. Pierce M.D." faces the title page. The text is illustrated throughout with anatomical engravings including skeletal, cranial, phrenological, and medical diagrams, as well as color chromolithograph plates depicting skin diseases. A newspaper clipping obituary for Mrs. A. C. Purvis of Nauwigewauk is pasted inside the front cover.

The binding shows significant wear with fraying and loss at the spine ends and corners. The text block is detached or loosened from the covers, and several pages at the front and rear are torn or detached. Pages are toned throughout.
