A carte de visite photograph of Bayard Taylor (1825–1878). Taylor was an American poet, author, travel writer, translator, and diplomat born in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. He gained early recognition for his travel narratives, including "Views A-Foot, or Europe Seen with Knapsack and Staff" (1846), and went on to publish numerous volumes of poetry, fiction, and travel literature. His English-language translation of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's "Faust" was widely regarded among the foremost renditions of the work. Taylor was appointed United States Minister to Germany in 1878, a position he held until his death in Berlin later that year.
