Extensive archival “shoebox” collection of amateur snapshot photographs documenting enlisted life in post–World War II Japan, 1945–1948, from the collection of Houston E. Bird (1927–2021). Views include U.S. Army base life, officers and enlisted men, Japanese locals, barracks, pets and animals, dogs, architecture, shrines, and art. Bird served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1948 and later graduated from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh in 1951, working thereafter as a self-employed commercial artist. Wear and handling consistent with age.
