Absentee bids let you place your maximum bid on an item before the live auction begins. During the live show, we’ll continue bidding on your behalf up to your max bid — just like leaving a bid with a traditional auctioneer.
When you place an absentee bid, the system sets the current bid conservatively — just enough to keep you in the lead without revealing your full amount.
The current bid shown on each lot reflects all confirmed absentee bids and updates automatically as new bids come in.
When the live auction starts, bidding will begin at the current bid. The auctioneer will continue bidding on behalf of absentee bidders up to their max bids.
Because absentee bids can arrive seconds apart, the current bid you see may not always include bids still being processed. Refresh the page for the most up-to-date information.

Lot 146 - Pair of Antique French Mourning Correspondence with Black-Bordered Envelopes and Letters, Addressed to Gonfaron, Var and Chateaudun, Circa 1890s-1907
Pair of antique French mourning correspondence, each with a black-bordered envelope and enclosed letter. One envelope is addressed to Monsieur Louis Fian at the "Entrepot de bois de bonnellerie" ("cooperage wood warehouse") in Gonfaron, Var, bearing two green 5-centime stamps and a Toulon-sur-Mer postmark. The enclosed letter is dated "Reynier, le 21 Janvier 1907" and is a business order for barrel staves and cooperage supplies, signed "Darvaire." The second envelope is addressed to Monsieur Passard, architect, at Chateaudun, bearing a blue 15-centime Sage type stamp. The enclosed letter is dated "Ce Vendredi 6 Novembre" and is a personal family letter written in blue ink, beginning "Mon Pierre cheri."
Both envelopes and letters feature black mourning borders. The envelopes show tearing and wear at corners and edges, with creasing to the letters at fold lines.
