"The Science of Life; or, Self-Preservation" is an antique medical treatise on nervous and physical debility, spermatorrhoea, impotence, and sterility by George Howard Jones, M.D., described as the Gold Medal Prize Essay. The cover is titled "Know Thyself" in gilt lettering on blue cloth with gilt floral and sunburst decorations. Published by authority of the Peabody Medical Institute, Boston, Massachusetts, 1881. Copyright 1881 by Albert H. Hayes.
Jones is identified as Chief Consulting Physician at the Peabody Medical Institute, a graduate of Harvard Medical College, Class of 1864, late member of the Massachusetts Medical Society, late associate member of the American Medical Association, and assistant surgeon with the 5th Massachusetts Volunteers. A frontispiece portrait of Jones is included. The book contains a fold-out document from the Board of Officers of the National Medical Association at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, dated January 1, 1876, resolving to award Jones a Gold and Jewelled Medal for his contributions to medical science, signed by Augustus A. Bissell, M.D., R. A. Simpson, M.D., and John Watson, M.D.
