Vintage rotating planisphere titled "The Handy Star Finder / Astronomy Made Easy," designed by Commander S. E. Stubbs, O.B.E., R.D., R.N.R. Published by C. S. Hammond & Co., Inc., New York, New York, copyright 1944. The front features a black square overlay with cutout windows and white lettering indicating Eastern Horizon, Western Horizon, Midnight, and Noon, with brass grommets at the corners. A rotating light blue disc beneath displays constellation maps with labeled stars and constellation boundaries. The outer ring is calibrated with months, dates, and hours for aligning the visible sky. The reverse contains printed reference text including operating instructions, a table of constellations with their principal stars, a list of 11 meteor showers with dates and characteristics, definitions of astronomical terms, planetary distance data with mean diameters and sidereal periods, and information on the Moon. Calibrated for 40 degrees north latitude. Accompanied by its original printed paper envelope reading "Hammond's Handy Star Finder" with a star device, identifying C. S. Hammond & Company, Inc. as "Map Engravers, Printers and Publishers Since 1900." The planisphere shows light surface wear. The envelope shows soiling, edge wear, and creasing.
